Wizard of Oz
Like so many girls her age, little Dorothy Gale of Kansas dreams of what lies over the rainbow. One day a twister hits her farm and carries her away over the rainbow to another world.
This new production of THE WIZARD OF OZ is an enchanting interpretation of the all-time classic, totally reconceived for Somerset West’s Playhouse stage. Developed from the ever popular MGM screenplay in 1987 by the Royal Shakespeare Company, this production contains the beloved songs from the Oscar-winning movie score, all the favorite characters and iconic moments, plus a few surprises along the way. Click your heels together and join Scarecrow, Tin Man, Lion, Dorothy, the sixty five strong cast and crew and her little dog Toto as they journey through the magical land of Oz to meet the Wizard and obtain their hearts’ desires.
The show stars old favorites such as Jarred Pitout (Grease, Annie), James Bone (Grease), Liam Walsh (National Acting Competition winner, The Little Mermaid) and Anne Walsh (Grease, Annie). The role of Dorothy is filled by sugar-sweet Carly Rose Beavon (Snow White, Cinderella van die Kaap) and the wizard played by Neil Ferguson (A Slice of Saturday Night). Watch out for the Wicked Witch of the West played by Nicolette Fernandes (Grease, Annie, A Slice of Saturday Night) and as you rediscover the many layers of Oz in this fantastic musical treat for the whole family. Baggins and Jojo are our newcomers and will alternate in playing the doggy dream role of Toto.
This technically complex production makes use of an experience award winning team with musical direction by Helen Dooley and music by the Shiraz band. Noel Pitout heads up a fantastic team of costumiers and Zanodean Cassiem and his crew will be putting together the demanding set. Sume Lotter has flavored the show with her exceptional knack for musical theatre choreography. Together with this team and many other helpers the rainbows ultimate design rests with director Darryl Spijkers (Grease, Annie, To Kill a Mockingbird), assisted by Sam Taylor. This team won Best Musical for 2014 (Annie) and 2016 (Grease) and this show promises to be even bigger and better!
