Darryl Spijkers

Darryl is a Drama teacher and Head of Culture at Parel Vallei High School by day, with a passion for his learners, school plays and the Playhouse Theatre (of which he is the chairman), by night. His theatre experience dates back to Glenwood High School Drama Club followed by completing a first level Drama course at UKZN in 2002. In 2004 when he moved to Somerset West he choreographed and co-directed the Norman Robbins pantomime 'Hansel and Gretel' for the HHDS with Kelly Westraad (Prior), and has subsequently directed and designed over thirty shows. You may have seen him in the Cape Town Gilbert & Sullivan Society touring production of Yeoman of the Guard (2012) as a jester, in Teddy Davis' Fiddler on the Roof (2011) in his favourite role as the fiddler, or in The Wizard of Oz (2017) as the Scarecrow - all at the Artscape Opera House. He has directed Snoopy, Grease, Romeo and Juliet, Jack and the Beanstalk and LeMoulin Rouge over and above Playhouse productions which exclude plays written and directed for local schools. Darryl has performed in Hansel and Gretel, Gulls, Hello and Goodbye, Baby with the Bathwater, Absurd Person Singular, Cinderella the Pantomime and The Ugly Sister's Act. In his spare time he enjoys music, movies, poetry and spending time with his friends and dogs.
